Future Boss
Helping students in NYC prepare for life beyond high school requires empathy and resolve.
Jeff Petway serves as a dedicated professional at The Business of Sports School in NYC, where his primary role is to assist all students in discovering and pursuing post-secondary options. His work is comprehensive, ensuring every student finds a suitable path after high school, reflecting a deep commitment to their future beyond graduation. This foundational support is central to his mission within the school community.

Central to Mr. Petway's philosophy is the understanding that "it's not always college". He firmly believes that each kid must have their own unique path, which might include employment, trade programs, or simply taking time to explore what opportunities are available to them. This individualized approach ensures that students are not confined to a single expectation but are empowered to pursue the direction best suited for their aspirations and circumstances.
Mr. Petway's inspiration for his vital work stems from a personal connection to the guidance he received during his own high school years. He explains that when he was in high school, he had someone similar to him who performed the same kind of work, an experience that profoundly influenced his career choice and dedication to helping students. He can empathize deeply with the challenges and decisions students face as they navigate their educational and professional futures.
He holds a special interest in his student-athletes, particularly those who aspire to compete at the next level. For these individuals, Mr. Petway provides tailored guidance to help them achieve their athletic and academic goals, ensuring they have the necessary support to pursue opportunities in college sports. This specific focus underscores his comprehensive approach to student success, catering to diverse talents and ambitions.
A significant achievement in his work at The Business of Sports School this year has been the remarkable success of having 100% of his students secure a post-secondary option. While he humbly states this is "normal" for his practice, he acknowledges the expanded scope of options that contributed to this success. This perfect rate of placement highlights his effectiveness and the robust support system he has implemented for the students.
To achieve this 100% placement rate, Mr. Petway and his team have "expanded their horizons a little bit more". This year, they have incorporated a wider array of pathways, including more trade programs and an increased number of students pursuing "three plus two programs or four plus one programs". These innovative programs allow students to earn both their bachelor's and master's degrees concurrently, providing accelerated and comprehensive educational opportunities.
Mr. Petway's professional journey into college counseling began in a different capacity, as an athletic director. He observed that many of his student-athletes who aimed for college did not ultimately attend because they failed to receive offers. Recognizing this gap, he identified post-secondary counseling as an indirect yet effective way to help these students achieve their goals, even if it meant guiding them toward different paths. This realization spurred his transition into the counseling field.
He secured his current position by applying to an organization called Student Leadership Network. Despite possessing "little to no experience in college counseling" at the time, the organization recognized his potential. They "saw a vision" in him, believing he would be a good fit for the school, and upon being given the opportunity, he "hit the ground running". This demonstrates his proactive nature and ability to quickly adapt and excel in a new role.
Beyond the specific details of his role at The Business of Sports School, Mr. Petway is described as a "passionate Director of College Counseling" with a "robust background in guiding students through the complex landscape of college admissions". He is committed to "lifelong learning" and is currently enhancing his expertise by pursuing a Master's Degree in School Counseling and Counselor Education. This advanced study sharpens his skills in developmental psychology, counseling techniques, and educational leadership, enabling him to contribute more profoundly to student success and well-being. He also emphasizes that he has had the privilege of addressing diverse student populations' unique needs, aspirations, and challenges through personalized counseling, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.
As he continues his professional growth, Mr. Petway actively seeks to connect with fellow educators, counselors, and thought leaders in the field of education. His overarching goal is to share insights, learn from others' experiences, and explore innovative approaches to counseling that can better serve students in their educational journeys. He invites collaboration and discussion on educational counseling and college admissions strategies, underscoring his dedication to making a collective difference in students' lives as they navigate their paths to higher education.
